How to become a lazy dog owner
“What’s that supposed to mean?” you’re probably wondering now!
In my opinion, lazy dog owners are good dog owners!
This statement does NOT apply to working dogs such as: assistance dogs.
Quite often we don’t consider how much rest/sleep our dogs need and how much time we have left that we have to fill with quality.
So how much rest/sleep does our dog need? Much more we think about!
Give your dog more time to rest and fill the rest of the time with quality for both of you. Do less with more quality!
I like to show you how you and your dog can build a good partnership and have a really good time together. Health of body, mind and soul starts with health of the soul and this is important for the dog owner and the dog!
Everything else is a luxury

TRUST:
The first 18 month of the life of your dog is so important to learn and feel that they can trust you, your family and that you are the one who are taking care that they are always safe! This is the key thing to do as the basic of your relationship. Dogs live in a human world so we need to show them that this world is safe if they are with us, that they can trust us in every situation
HOME:
A cave to be safe, to be loved and to rest.
FOOD:
Vital! You are the one who is feeding your dog (what ever you dog food religion is) You are taking care that the food is healthy and safe to eat.
COMMUNITY:
We are not a pack, because we are NO dogs! BUT! We live together so we are a part of our dogs community, also our cats, rabbits etc.. Dog do need other dogs! BUT! Dogs never meets dogs on leads! This is not socialising! To have free running time with dogs is fun and to walk on lead with other dogs is fun, too. To be social is a key thing to learn in the first 18 month!
How much rest/sleep does our dog need?
The light and deep sleep phases are present in our dogs just as in humans, but they have a completely different sleeping behaviour than we do. Dogs have a much higher need for sleep.
An adult human needs about eight hours of sleep a day, while a dog needs 15-20 hours. However, we have to differentiate between real sleep and rest. They are only in deep sleep for 6-8 hours.
In addition to the light and deep sleep phases already mentioned, dogs have something else in common with us; the REM phases. Our dog dreams in these. Easily recognized by twitching paws, blinking, slight whimpering, barking or even growling.
Incidentally, the adaptability of dogs to us humans also affects the resting phases. They usually take rest breaks when nothing exciting is happening with us. This is where people with eventful everyday life should be careful. Because sleep deprivation shows up in dogs in a similar way to us humans.
Irritability, nervousness or even illnesses are also part of their appearance. When it comes to an over-excited dog, many often think “my goodness, but he’s underutilized” and entertain their four-legged friend again and again.
Are there differences in puppies, young dogs, adult dogs and senior dogs?
Yes, there are differences. Puppies, elderly and sick dogs require more sleep than healthy adult dogs. It can happen that the dogs rest 22 hours a day.
Like us humans, our dogs also process and internalize their everyday life while sleeping and dream, for example, of the last dog encounter, a chase or defending the garden.
This is particularly important for puppies, as they experience the world much more intensively than an adult dog. Sleep is essential for puppies to grow into healthy balanced dogs. It’s perfectly normal for the newcomer to happily sleep in 90% of the day. Every part of his body grows very rapidly during this time – from his muscles to his central nervous system. So they not only needs sleep to process the many impressions, but also to increase the energy supply that he needs to grow.
How come, even though dogs are asleep, they’re wide awake in no time when something exciting is happening?
Our dogs can fall asleep within a few seconds but are also awake again in a flash if need be – or the fridge door opens. Unlike us, you don’t need “the cup of coffee” to be operational.
On the one hand, this special quality can be explained by their past. Wildlife in nature must always be alert. This is still true today for the ancestor of our dogs, the wolf. If danger threatens, it is sometimes vital to be able to flee immediately or to defend one’s life. And also for the hunt you have to be wide awake as soon as a prey animal approaches. Anyone who still has to stretch and stretch is at a disadvantage. But it is also attributable to us humans. After all, we have used this characteristic of our four-legged friends and bred them to be high-performance athletes and guard dogs. You must be ready immediately if we request it. Day and night he has to show the will to defend his belongings.
The innate need for rest is therefore no longer recognizable in many of our domestic dogs. It has been lost through breeding and adaptation to us. So it’s our job to see that we teach them the need for rest they need for need a healthy and balanced life.
What are the requirements for a healthy dog sleep? In order for our dog to be able to rest peacefully, it is of course important that there is not constant hustle and bustle or that everyone is not walking past the dog. Therefore, one of the prerequisites for healthy dog sleep is the position of the sleeping place. The berth should rather be in a quiet corner. Is the dog namely z. B. in the middle of the room or in the hallway, we convey to him that he should feel responsible when it comes to guarding the house. And as a bouncer, you can’t sleep so peacefully after all. A comfortable dog bed also provides relaxation and fixed rest and sleep times also help many four-legged friends to relax enough.
